Water-Wise by Design
EFFICIENT BY NATURE
A Water Wise garden is greener in spirit, not just in colour. It grows in step with the rhythms of our region, working with nature rather than against it. Healthy soil, generous mulching, and locally grown plants adapted to our climate form the foundation of a garden that thrives year-round while asking very little in return. By choosing plants suited to Western Cape conditions and planning the garden carefully, you can create a lush, colourful space that sips water instead of guzzling it.
A truly water-wise garden isn’t about compromise,
rather a celebration of resilience.
Smart Gardening
RESPECTS WATER
It starts with climate-appropriate, low-water plants, efficient irrigation, and grouping plants by similar water needs into hydro zones. Water is applied only where and when it’s needed, while hardscaped areas like paving or gravel reduce unnecessary use. Using local indigenous and other water-efficient plants is central to the approach. Water-Wise principles work with any landscape style, from formal too relaxed, traditional to contemporary. Whether designed from scratch or adapted over time, a Water-Wise landscape makes the most of what a site already offers—sun and shade, wind exposure, natural features, and existing vegetation—while applying timeless design fundamentals with water conservation firmly in mind.
Key principles of a water-wise gardens include:
- Plant Selection: Using indigenous or drought-tolerant, water-wise plants that are adapted to the local climate, such as succulents, aloes, and proteas.
- Soil Improvement: Adding compost to enhance soil structure and water-holding capacity.
- Mulching: Applying a thick layer of organic material to reduce evaporation, suppress weeds, and keep roots cool.
- Hydrozoning: Grouping plants with similar water needs together to ensure efficient watering, placing high-water plants close to the house and low-water plants further away.
- Efficient Irrigation: Using methods like drip irrigation, watering in the early morning/evening, and harvesting rainwater to reduce municipal water usage
